Yearn to be free from all those things in this culture that distract you from God and diminish you as person. Break the chains of temptation. Unlock others from their imprisonment. This is exactly what Jesus does in Luke 4:13-22.
When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time. Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.’ And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, ‘Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.’ All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth.
Think about this story. It starts with the end of Jesus' 40 days in the desert. There He was tempted and tested by the devil. Having survived this trial, Jesus is filled with the power of the Spirit and begins preaching throughout Galilee and in his hometown of Nazareth. After reading from Isaiah, He boldly proclaims what we now take for granted: "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."
Even though this is a specific reference to His own divinity, Christ is also saying to us: 'exchange the yolk of human expectation and evil temptation for the divine right to answer your call, live it fully, experience it in joy, and share it with all those who want to break the chains of spiritual enslavement. Let this Scripture be fulfilled in your life.'
Pray and you will have the guidance to know how to survive the tests of the evil one. Believe and you will see the direction of your life. Love and you will know what it means to help others on this path.
