Come and See (Homily)

Writer: Fr. Thomas ColyandroFr. Thomas Colyandro

The first Sunday of Lent is filled with the expectation of the Resurrection and the need to follow St. Philip's advice to come and see the Lord. He reminds us to pay attention to God and to remember that we need not be afraid.

Even though all of us feel the need to be seen and heard by other humans, we must remember that God knows us most intimately of all. In our births, God gave us meaning and purpose. No matter how small we feel, God reminds us that we are not a mistake and that He calls each of us back to Him.

If this is true, though, then why is there so much hatred, degradation, and war? You see, God loves us so much that He gave us free will. So, to a great degree, we choose this horrible existence. And that is why we need to take better care of ourselves, our families, our friends, our parishes, and our communities. In the end, we need to love and to evangelize those who do not know the Triune God intimately.

And that is what Lent is all about. A time of quiet and work. A time of resetting the self. A time of getting back on track with God. A time to help others 'come and see the Lord.'
