In this homily from January 1, Fr. Thomas explains the importance of the commemoration of St. Basil the Great who was a theologian, bishop, and a man of deep spirituality who significantly contributed to our understanding of the Holy Spirit and crafted its expression in the Nicene Creed.
St. Basil is also the founder of monasticism in the East and famously wrote the Asketikon to provide guidance for what it means to live in a Christian community, primarily in a monastery, but also in a parish community.
This is especially important today because media distracts our heads and hearts. Thus, St. Basil remind us that if we engage in asceticism and prayer, to the extent we are able, we can re-enter into a deeper relationship with the Holy Spirit.
